Product of the Month August 2007 - Boaties Fry Pan

Frustrated trying to fit a round frying pan onto a square stove?

Tech Specification or why the BoatiesFryPan is so good:

Design
Designed to fit recreational stoves which are normally compact and have limited cooking area.

The pan is rectangular in shape and measures 250x200x45 mm and weighs 950 gms.

The same approximate cooking surface as a 255mm round pan.

Handle
The handle has a Bakelite grip so the pan can be put in the oven, but care should be taken as the grip will get extremely hot.

The attachment of the handle allows it to fit over most retaining rails and is strongly riveted to the pan. The handle is compact to minimise the ' sticking out ' when on the stove.

Sloping front
The sloping front end allowes food to be slid out easily.

Material
The pan is made of 4 mm aluminium, which gives good heat transfer and even temperature.

The inside of the pan is finished with two layers of non stick coating to directive 2005/618/EC. The exterior is silicon paint.

Storage
Storage of the pan is simple as it can stand on its side or end.

Cooking with the Boaties Fry Pan
When designing the pan, we were strictly thinking of the practical shape in terms of limited space and recreational stove shapes. We did not realise the advantages of cooking in a rectangular shape until we tried them.

Most food cooked in a frying pan is not round and fits better in this shape. Pouring liquids like hot fat is safer as a corner can be used as a spout.

Sausages
Just roll up and down and easily exit over the end.

Even hamburgers fit better in a rectangular shape. Chops and bacon easy to cook.

Pancakes
So easy to spread the batter. Hold the pan handle up and pour the batter across inside the pan by the handle and it runs down the pan like a curtain. The excess can be tipped around the edges.

Tossing is simple as the pancake is symmetrical. Just shake the pancake up the sloping end and toss. The rectangular shape of pancakes makes them easier to roll up with fillings.

Eggs
The sloping front end allows food to be slid out easily. By slightly holding the handle up the spread of the white of the egg can be controlled. If two eggs are cooked these can be divided giving square eggs that fit a peice of toast.

Fish
Fillets are long and fit side by side using the pan more easily.

Omelette
Nice rectangular shape which allowes the filling to be sealed in like an envelope. The vertical sides of the pan give the omelette a nice thick edge.

Product Reviews:

Review taken from Yachting World

David Pugh - July 2007

"Why are all frying pans round? Finding no good answer, yachtsman George Stead developed the Boaties Fry Pan. Built in 4mm thick aluminium, the rectangular pan fits on a typical two-ring boat stove and still leaves room to put the kettle on, which makes it a winner straight away in my book. Stead even raised the handle to clear the cooker's fiddles.
With three hungry crew, I put it to the bacon sandwich test and could easily fit in eight rashers. In fact, the design accommodates a lot of food better than a round pan - bacon, sausages, fish and fried eggs, for example - and the thick metal ensured even cooking even in the corners. Good quality non-stick means it is easy to wash up and the shape is more efficient in locker space. The pan has earned a place on my boat."
